4MAT Webinar Series

Lecture Isn't All Talk

Thursday, January 7, 2010 3-4:30pm CST

Proven Strategies for Expanding How You Deliver Static Information.

Have you been in the middle of a lecture where you could feel the energy leaving the room? Where people get lost in the sea of details and begin to tune out? With the increasing demands on instructors to compress more and more content into less time, it is natural for teachers and trainers to rely too heavily on lecturing to students.
Substantial research exists that show the impact that interactive lecture techniques can have on information transfer and retention.  This session will explore the research on lectures, discuss the pros and cons of lecture and examine lecture in light of the emerging research on how the brain learns.
You'll discover proven techniques for creating more dynamic and interactive lectures, explore alternative lecture strategies that help create stronger connections to content and learn how to combine concrete experiences with abstract concepts to connect learning to the lives of learners.

This webinar will explore:
  • The pros and cons of lecture as a teaching strategy
  • The brain research on teaching by telling
  • Proven methods for creating more dynamic and interactive lectures that increase learner engagement.
The 4MAT Webinar Series is a series of 90 minute training sessions that explores the underlying elements of high quality teaching and learning. These sessions can be attended by anyone interested in improving their instructional performance, from Primary teachers to technical trainers to university professors.

Please call About Learning at (800) 822-4MAT to request our complete schedule of sessions.

4MAT 4 Algebra

(to be announced)

In this 90-minute session, you will experience 4MAT 4 Algebra, a highly dynamic and engaging way of teaching Algebra I Based on the way that student's learn best.
One of the key challenges in algebra is the long list of topics that are covered and the types of activities that teachers are using to help students master these concepts. It is sometimes difficult for teachers to hone in on the essential ideas that are most prone to motivate and engage students in learning math.
This webinar presents 10 key concepts that can help teachers navigate the standards and create more meaningful instructional units for students. Our course is about getting students out of their seats and engaged in meaningful tasks that help them understand the underlying meaning of what they are learning. There are many more ways to learn than just reading and worksheets.
These activities are particularly effective for students that do not learn well through traditional instruction.

At the conclusion of the webinar, each participant will obtain a copy of the conceptual structure of the course along with the underlying topics that are housed under these key concepts. Participants will also receive one major 4MAT unit, which can be used as the initial unit when introducing students to Algebra.

About 4MAT Training

About Learning offers a wide variety of training and support to help educators implement 4MAT in their own organizations. All our training follows the 4MAT Cycle, so it is highly engaging and interactive and consistently achieves very high marks from teachers and instructors.  Below is a listing of workshops that are most requested by our many clients.

4MAT Introductory Training

These half-day or full-day 4MAT Introductory Sessions are ideal for building support for continued 4MAT implementation and use. About Learning has a large network of trainers from across the country who can come to your organization to perform this training.

About Learning offers a series of introductory training sessions to introduce your staff to 4MAT. Awareness sessions include the following:

  • Understanding the differences in how students learn
  • The key tenets of high quality instruction
  • Creating more dynamic and inclusive classrooms
  • The Five Points of Assessment: A view of assessment through the lens of 4MAT

4MAT Core Training

4MAT Core Training is for teachers or organizations that want to integrate 4MAT into their daily instruction. It includes 3 to 6 Days of training in the 4MAT Model and how to use 4MAT to help transform instruction.

4MAT Training teaches you to:

  • Understand and accommodate learning differences
  • Use more powerful teaching strategies to optimize student learning
  • Design more efficient and effective curriculum
  • Learn to conceptualize instruction to increase its impact

The initial training comprises 3 days, with follow-up coaching and support modules available for more in-depth study.

4MAT Coaching and Continuation Training

After initial training, the most essential consideration is how you continue to facilitate and support the implementation of this model. This type of support is most often delivered in conjunction with a local 4MAT Coach, who can work with teachers to help hone and refine their 4MAT units. Coaches can work with teachers one on one or in small groups. Teachers truly appreciate this type of follow-up support, as they are working on creating their own courses, based on their own content, with the support of a trained professional on the process of 4MAT. After initial training and implementation, follow-up coaching and support should be provided to all teachers working to implement 4MAT in the classroom.

4MAT Trainer Certification

For those individuals that want to be certified to conduct 4MAT Training within their own organizations, 4MAT Trainer Certification is required. In 4MAT Trainer Certification, participants become certified to present and implement the most practical and effective teaching method available. 4MAT Trainers qualify to present the 4MAT Training program within their own organizations, dramatically reducing the cost of implementation. You’ll learn to present different 4MAT programs, lead an in-house staff development initiative, coach others in the art of lesson development and organize curriculum to promote higher learner involvement.
